|

My girlfriend and I are leaving for Prague in August, and we're about to send out resumes to possible employers.
Someone suggested we might want to apply together. Not only would we get to work together, but also that way employers know we have someone to rely on for help with lesson planning, and general emotional support while living in a foreign country.
It seems to make sense, but seems a little weird. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks,
Jonathan |

Yeah, it's possible that you may have a little advantage applying as a couple; this can also impact housing issues if you're hoping to work at a school that arranges housing for you. It might also mean that teaching in Prague will be more economically feasible for you because you can automatically share the costs of housing, whether you get it thru a school or find it on your own. Housing is relatively expensive in the city, and it's usually a fairly big chunk of a teacher's salary.
That said, though you might have a different experience, it's rare to actually get any job offers in Prague before you are there. In the past, schools have contracted with new teachers who didn't show, or who proved to have misrepresented themselves in some way, so basically the schools want to see you standing in their offices, nicely dressed, certificate and CV in hand, before they actually make any commitments. However, it's certainly not going to do any harm to send your resumes (C.V.s) in advance.
Your timing should be good, though: a lot of hiring for the Sept-June school season is done in late August/early September, so you should have good chances to nail down reasonable positions applying at that time. |
