Sorry to keep popping on here to ask questions like this. The folks who are offering me a job in China have referred to a "non-criminal check" a few times and I'm not 100% sure what it is they're talking about. I thought it referred to an FBI background check but the guy told me it's not and that one's "local police" do it. Has anyone done this lately? What is it?

I'm not sure what the name of it is... but if you go to your state police, they can run a finger print check through the FBI database. They might have an alternate check as well (for example, ACIC/NCIC check -- Arkansas Crime Information Center / National Crime Information Center).

It is a pretty easy check that they do in 20 minutes. They notarized mine. Then I had that notary authenticated at my Secretary of State (I think).

Local police stations can provide you with a quick, usually free criminal background check too. It won't be as comprehensive, it will usually just say that you have no known criminal background in that municipality and may be called a record of good conduct. But that often suffices for China.

If your local police station says that they don't do that, press them a little bit, as all local police stations are technically supposed to be provide something like that for their citizens upon request. Tell them that you need it for employment and are traveling abroad soon.

If the OP is an American citizen presently living in the U.S., the following link will give him all of the info that he'll need:

http://www.myfbireport.com/

As stated above, all that's needed is a letter from one's local police department. The website will tell the location of the closest police station. Fingerprints can be made at the same place.

This should be a sticky.

All you need to do is walk into your local police station and ask them for a statement showing that you have no criminal record in that jurisdiction. Show them a valid ID and it takes less than 10 minutes for them to run your name through the computer and print out a certificate of non-criminal record. This is for the U.S. and it's good enough for most provinces in China.

It's best to request an FBI background check and get it notarized by your state. With the ever changing requirements, safeguard yourself.

Not all police stations offer the service. In my city, only two stations have walk-in service five days per week. Some precincts will offer finger print service for a few hours per day and only on certain days of the week. The website url that I posted is accurate for my city. I recommend that anyone who needs prints and a criminal check to refer to the website.

I was told by the school I'm applying for that China requires that the local police check be notarized, using the same steps as the degree notarization (send it to the state attorney general, then the Chinese consulate). Sigh. Another pointless pain in the ass that will take a month to process and cost me over $100.

I have not left China for 9 years, so how would I get a police check? I have no residency anywhere back home. Would a local check be acceptable?
