In my initial post, I stated:

Actually, my use of the "well running dry" really wasn't particularly about KSA's oil economy; wages have been stagnant or sliding downward for quite some time. The focus here is about that decreasing "well" of salaries and bennies.
There's another piece to this. Job seekers who have hit KSA's retirement age (60) are generally left with one option: working via a biz/work visit visa with the crappiest of contracting companies). When is enough really enough?

Actually we are seeing the dying embers of ELT by expats here in Saudi. We won't be totally gone but significantly reduced.

I think the same thing is happening in the far east also, salaries remaining low/static and visa rules being racheted even tighter. |

Within one generation China will produce its own teachers of English. There will be no need - real or perceived - for TEFLers from the Anglosphere.
If my prediction is wrong you can take it up with me on the other side of the Pearly Gates. I will have left this Vale of Tears by then ! |

Yes Scot. The plight of each of those countries is somehow directly related to your ESL teaching there....or not?
Funny coincidence, though.
The end has come to the prospect of a profitable ESL career in Saudi, too. The last bastion of easy money for teaching English.
Military gigs have now all "smelled the stench of cheap coffee," and have lowered their salaries to meet the new lower salaries of the rest of the teaching jobs in Saudi.
Aramco (direct hire), according to many who have posted here, is now a thing of the past.
Booz Allen has lost their contract.
Blue Force, Vinnell, and SALTS have been and will continue to cut salaries and benefits.
New jobs teaching in Saudi are now a tenable solution for only the desperate, the financially stricken, and the religious zealots.
But, alas the golden years, which I caught just the tail-end of, were fun while they lasted. |
