Refugees teaching English now a trend
By Matt Salusbury, EL Gazette | July 2016

After reporting the story of Muhammad and Mosa, two Afghan-born refugees teaching English in Montalto Uffugo, Italy, we have observed an increasing trend of refugees teaching English to Italians increase. These initiatives are often organised by local councils and associations with the aim of facilitating inclusion and mutual understanding between refugees and local communities, at times caught unprepared by the ‘migrant crisis’.

In Castione della Presolana, a ski resort close to Bergamo, refugees from Africa taught English and French to the locals. In Pelago, a village near Florence, groups of refugees and locals met to teach each other – and the turnout from the locals was so high that a shift system had to be set up. In Battaglia Terme, Padua refugees organised English lessons in the local library.

Recently, 64 police community support officers in Caltanissetta, Sicily have started taking English lessons from a refugee as part of their compulsory professional development. Twice a week, in uniform, the officers gather to attend their lessons at the police station. Their teacher, Rahman, an asylum-seeker from Pakistan, told the Italian press that they are ‘great students’.

Lessons are focused on practical skills that the officers might need on the job, such as giving directions. The project was the mayor’s idea – as the officers often deal with foreigners, English is a necessary skill. ‘We live in a multicultural city,’ commented one of the officers. ‘We must be prepared.’

It sounds like a good solution to a tough problem to me. You have European countries taking in an unthinkable number of refugees and trying to support them, and then there are all these refugees who just want jobs so they can support themselves and get on with their lives. This works for everyone.

Economic EFL refugees are everywhere to be found today in Europe.....that is those native English speaking migrants from outside the EU...many arrive homeless and with very little savings at all to start up a new life!

I disagree. If you're talking about Americans, Canadians, Aussies, and Kiwis, their numbers are very few indeed these days, since it's become so much more difficult to fly under the legal radar.

Very Happy Very Happy

This is about migrants fleeing from war zones and persecution, that of course could include (African) Americans.

I presume that said refugees were English teachers in their country of origin? Have an appropriate level of English and the necessary qualifications?

Either way, can't wait until the Daily Mail gets to hear about this!
