Hi

I'm currently waiting on my Humanities visa. I'm going to be working as a teacher but I am also a musician (a very good one according to other musicians). I'd like to play gigs in Japan for fun without violating the terms of my visa. However I'd rather not do it for free. Could I get around this by being "paid" in beer and food? Or would that count as "working"? I presume not but has anyone had experience with this? Rather not do cash in hand work because it's been a pain getting my visa sorted and I don't want to risk losing it. There's also the concern of taking work off professional musicians who want actual money I suppose. Don't wanna be that guy.

I think you may be worrying about things a bit much, mate. Cash in hand won't hurt your visa status. Neither will food and beer. If you are worried about your conscience, then try not to confuse legal matters with moral ones. Hoping you have an excellent time, filled with music, cash, food, and drink!

You can apply at immigration for authorization to do work in a field other than the one(s) authorized by your visa. You can download the paperwork from their website.
