Pure fiction, but a beautiful story about the line drawn in Lebanon:
"The Rock of Tanios" by Amin Maalouf

Tariq Ali's "Islam Quintet" Series is also fiction, but creates snapshots of the Islamic world at pivotal points of decline and lose.

Another book by Robert Lacey that I just finished is called Inside the Kingdom. This has the more recent history of the country. It is well written and compelling.
