I'm curious to know if any other adjuncts in ESL (or other college subjects) have received notice about contracts being pro rated. Several instructors at comm. college were notified that due to insufficient enrollment, their contract will be pro rated, e.g., some would be paid 1/2 the usual rate because enrollment fell below 75% of max. Incredible! Instructors still spend the same amt. of time planning, teaching, offering stipulated office hours, grading, copying, admin requirements, etc. However, if enrollment EXCEEDS the max, there is no extra pay! Instructors received an email asking if they would advise dept. chair if they would accept a pro rated class. Ludicrous! Such a decision is contingent upon many factors, e.g., the % of pro ration and the subject (writing involves more external, unpaid time than a reading or speaking class). The exec. division terms this a "pilot" which suggests they are waiting to see how many desperate souls will subjugate themselves to this forced slave labor. Anyone else out there experiencing the same? Unfortunately, some are complacent and/or feel helpless with no recourse and some refused. Ah, yes, the times they are a changin'.

You might try contacting the Chronicle of Higher Education to see if they will take up this story. (They sometimes run articles on schools with exploitative/abusive working conditions for adjuncts...and this school's "pilot" policy seems particularly evil for the reasons you mention.) Or let me know (pm is fine) the name of this university and I will contact CHE. Just to confirm, did the school make this request to the adjuncts in writing (email would be fine)?

Dear Taikibansei,

Yes, adjuncts received an email advising them of this new reg. Thus far, it has not been mandatory for adjuncts to advise dept chairs if they will accept pro rated classes. Nothing like being on the black list! Those with low enrollment received a phone call AFTER they began teaching and had all dox & admin requirements completed. A few have sought legal advice. Others understandably lament that nothing can be done except to bite the bullet and teach at a reduced rate OR JUST SAY NO! What about those F-1 visa students who pay 3x the regular tuition? Might one argue then that 1 F-1= 3 regular students?! Also, per VA statutes on state employees, adjuncts are neither classified as "full-time" nor "part-time" but temporary employees. Thank you for the suggestion.
