So many mixed reviews/blogs. I teach in Russia so have no intention of moving...but a young friend is thinking of heading to Hong Kong.
Can anyone give me some idea of the working conditions at present?

Many thanks
Alison

This is the Taiwan board. I have never worked for them but they have a bad reputation from what I have heard.

Why specifically? If I read the blogs about Russia, I would never have come here;-)

I gather that the working hours are very long?

As I said I haven't worked for them so I cannot say, but maybe you can have a look at this https://spiffygirl.wordpress.com/2014/03/05/attention-esl-expats-hong-kong-good-monkey-tree-english-learning-center-horrible/

There's a big difference: you're talking about Russia; here we're not talking about Hong Kong in general but ONE particular company in Hong Kong. I'm sure no matter what country we are talking about there will be good and bad TEFL jobs.

Thank you for the link. However, I see that it is dated 2014(?)

Monkey Tree is a large franchise with many branches. Therefore your experience will differ from one branch to another. Some have reported terrible experiences while others have reported decent experiences. If you go in with low expectations and the attitude that it will be a short-term learning experience and a stepping stone on to better things, then you might be ok.

Use the interview as a chance to ASK questions about the centre where you will be working, find out about the working conditions and who you will be working with and read the contract carefully before signing.

Fine for a first gig I'd say, particularly if you've no real qualifications. Not worth considering after that.
