I recently read in a job posting for a teaching job in Taiwan that the cuisine in this country was not very tasty.

Would you agree?

If not, which dishes would you recommend?

Taiwanese dumplings are awesome. I know that much.

I’m a little late here, but Taiwan has great food. I personally liked the chicken rice porridge, ro mien (took some getting used after being accustomed to Japanese ramen), hot pot, ala cart restaurants, and various things you can eat at a night market. A lot of the best foods are really only available to parties of two or more.

If you’re coming from Japanese food, some foods will take some getting used to. But good food can be had in Taiwan for sure.

The old school pre-1949 cuisine is pretty bland. And you can end up ordering it inadvertently by walking into just any shop and asking for noodles. I've done that before, after a workout and was dying for some beef noodles. However, there is indeed tasty food to be had here and very easy to find.

Here are things I think most people would like that you can get most places on the island:

Chung Yo Dan Bing (Breakfast Stand specializing in it)
Luobo Gao (Radish Cake) Breakfast Shops
Fried Xin Bao Gu (Type of Mushroom) Fried Food Stand
Fried Squid or French Fries or Chicken from the same Fried Food Stand
Wontons on Noodles (Find them at a Ba-Wan shop)
Pork Ball soup from any Ba-Wan Shop

Tang Yuan (Tang Yuan Shops) --There is pork kind and also sweet kind. Sometimes the sweet kind comes with Long Lien and some kind of thin mushrooms. They're both great!

*Majiang Mien* -- Sesame and Peanut Sauce on Noodles.

Many dishes at the "100NT" Style sit down shops.

Pork (or whatever kind of) Shao Long Bao (You'll see the dumplings cooking in big stacks of Round wooden steamers)

If you're out in the countryside, sit down and eat a smoked Mountain Chicken with your friends.

Also, almost any populated area anywhere North of Sun Moon Lake you can find good Korean or Japanese food somewhere in Town.

Like someone else said, the really traditional places often are disappointing (Unless you like the Stinky Tofu in soup, or specifically order something like MaJiang Mien or Mien Sien).
