True, VS: reign - rein in - still a bit awkward in phrasing, but we get the gist. |
Having an obvious meaning doesn't excuse an English teacher misusing a common homonym.
VS |
The words 'reign' and 'rein' are homophones, not homonyms.
Homonyms have the same spelling.
Homophones may have the same or different spellings. |
Cambridge disagrees with you D. Merit and says the exact opposite! https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/homonym
Quote: |
Homonym:
a word that sounds the same or is spelled the same as another word but has a different meaning:
"No" and "know" are homonyms.
"Bow" (= bend at the waist) and "bow" (= weapon) are also homonyms.
Homophone:
a word which is pronounced the same as another word, but which has a different meaning or spelling:
The words "so" and "sew" are homophones.

So basically:

HOMONYMS are words that sound alike but have different meanings. Homophones are a type of homonym that also sound alike and have different meanings, but have different spellings. HOMOGRAPHS are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. |
So... all homophones and homographs are homonyms. So, I was right all along... LOL

I guess the one way to remember is that the phone suffix is naturally to do with sound, e.g. telephone, microphone, gramophone, whereas the graph suffix refers to writing (graph = to write in Greek), e.g. autograph, biography. Though I guess there are some exceptions with graph (cinematograph, photograph) |

Or just use homonym and cover both. |
