Anyone with experience teaching English Oaxaca (city)? I'm 27, from the United States, have a bachelor's degree (non-teaching), and a TEFL certificate. No teaching experience yet.

I'm not looking make a lot of money, but enough to pay rent and not worry about bills. I'm very attracted to the culture of Oaxaca. Of course it's very different in ways, but it reminds me much of my experience in Havana, Cuba, and maybe that has to do with some of my fondness for it.

If teaching English isn't much of an option in Oaxaca, are there any Mexican cities you might suggest that are somewhat similar?

Thank you in advance!

Culturally, there is nothing else in Mexico quite like Oaxaca, if that's your main interest in picking where to go.

Jobswise, you can pick just about anywhere in Mexico and find work teaching English, with varying degrees of what you can earn, and the types of classes to give. Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Queretaro offer the largest variety of jobs as there is demand for English at all ages and at companies, so you'll see lots of ESL institutes.

Smaller cities will have opportunities as well, though with fewer language institutes and less focus on business English.

Myself, I'm partial to Queretaro...it's growing fast and has lots of new families from other parts of the world.

There are jobs in Oaxaca City for people with your profile at language schools. Though it can be difficult to pay the rent. Retired expats have done quite a good job on driving up rents in the City. There are jobs around the state in small colleges and you just meet the minimum requirements but those jobs often go to people with a lot more experience and graduate degrees (often, but not always so go ahead and apply).
Guy's suggestion of Queretaro is probably a good place to gain some experience.
