As the subject heading suggests, i`d like to know how much money one can charge for private lessons as i`ll be in Santiago pretty soon for the next couple of months and have a few students lined up already.

Thanks for your help, Matt

people say between 10 and 15 lucas (10,000 and 15,000). I don't have any private students at the moment, but I think you just sort of use your judgement about how much the person would be willing to pay. Also, many folks insist on 1.5 hours min per lesson and cancellation penalties if not enough notice is given.

gl!

10,000 to 15,000 seems a bit steep to me unless it is for one and a half hours. Like to hear more opinions of this from people who do privates in Santiago.

I usually charge 10,000/hour if I travel and 8,000 at my home, all negotiable based on quantity of hours and if they pay up front - something I'd recommend you demand or they'll DEFINITELY flake off on you and leave your budget in tatters. Chileans are famous for not calling before they cancel - they just disappear, don't answer the phone or are evasive if they do. If you charge too little, no one will take you seriously.

Thanks for that advice, Dennis. Do you normally charge the month up front?

Clarification: the people I know who charge that amount are certified teachers with years of experience. Most of the people that have a CELTA and/or are more starting out charge 7 to 10. I know one person that charges 5, but thatīs very unusually low.

Is that for an hour and a half or one hour Eileen and do they normally pay the month up front?

I think thatīs per hour, and most people I know donīt charge for the month up front. I think it depends on the student. Itīs hard to find good students just like itīs hard to find good teachers. I think usually the initial meeting tells you a lot about the person and gives you an idea of how much of a flake they might be, or how busy they are and how likely they are to cancel. I know some people whoīve had the same private students for a year or more.
