hey,
just writing to see if anyone out there has any ideas as to how i, a non e.u. citizen (an american) and a non-german speaking one at that, can find work in austria. i just completed a tefl course and i'm in love with an austrian. at this point of the game, i would be willing to do basically anything (not just english teaching) but don't know exactly what's feasible. any ideas?

If you want to work legally, the short answer is that it's difficult to impossible for a non-EU citizen to secure employment teaching English in Austria. And I'm assuming you've just got a 30-day short course in TEFL - it will be different if you've got a master's degree and/or substantial experience.
I doubt there's much illegal work available in Austria.

Would Bratislava be close enough? By train, it's quite close to Vienna and you should be able to secure legal working documents for Slovakia. Perhaps you should consider the "area" - Austria's easily/quickly/cheaply accessible from several of the surrounding countries.

I work in Austria. There is not much work here unless:

A. You speak German
B. You have a MA or Ph.d

Language schools are usually owned by Austrians and taught by Austrians. They probably speak better English than you do.

Do you have a BA? One possibility is the Fulbright Teaching programme. You can do this for a period of two years and it pays about 900 Euro per month. The link for this is:

Austria is just one of those countries where there are very few jobs available for non EU citizens.
