Hi

I'd be interested to hear the experiences of any older people teaching in Spain, particularly anyone who has retired out there and teaches to boost a pension. Do you get accepted into schools? Any major issues surrounding age? Is it easy to get work? Is there a market amongst older Spanish people who want a similar aged teacher?

While I am older than your average English abroad teacher, I am not of retirement age yet. However, because I work for a TESOL certificate course I have come across a few people who are that age and their experiences seem positive for the most part. Most of the people I'm talking about are in Spain, which is where I am, but one guy I know has taught in Andorra, China, Ecuador and Russia. He seems to enjoy it and does exactly what you mention, which is use the earnings to supplement his retirement income. I don't know if it's ever easy to get this kind of work in Spain, but I would say it's not unusually difficult. Not only do there seem to be some older Spanish people who want a similar aged teacher, but in Spain I have found that there are students and schools that actually have a rather positive reaction to middle aged and older teachers because of the life experience and work experience they have. There also seems to be a view among some schools that you are more stable and maybe more likely to stick around for longer than a semester or a school year. Buena suerte!

It's a question of marketing yourself. I've also found that being older gives you an advantage over the younger crowd of teachers. It's an image thing, older and wiser. Wink
