Starting in April, I'll be working as an ALT in junior high school (maybe elem, too) in Tokyo or Chiba.

I'd like to pool resources and information with other Tokyo ALTs. I've taught in the JET program before in rural Japan and have lots of teaching ideas and recipes. I'd like to pick up some new tricks, too!

I hope this can become a cool thread on the forum Cool

Liz

Ne01,

So, do you have some questions about the job?

And I have some questions for you and all the people who've lurked this topic...

1. Are you currently teaching or are you about to start your illustrious career as an ALT? What level - elementary, junior highschool or senior highschool?

2. What has been your biggest challenge as an ALT? Or if you're just starting, what do you expect it to be?

Neo1,

I was a JET before, and as you may know, you can only apply to JET once. This time, I'll be working for Interac as an ALT in a combination of jh/elem schools.

As an ALT, your job can range from radio voice for examination recordings, activity club leader, sports coach, pen pal, sheriff, shoulder to cry on, English teacher for teachers, foreign correspondent, newspaper editor, adjudicator for speech contests, #1 mop pusher, eater of absent students' lunches, tour guide for visiting dignitaries, mediator for indignant Japanese teachers, kendo target practice, hapless taster of home economics cuisine, table tennis umpire, object of ridicule and hopeless crushes.

Really, the job's what you make it.

Neo1,

I've been following the thread on Interac.

Nope, no firm plan on the city yet. The only thing I know is that I'll be in Greater Tokyo. I asked for Chiba, but no promises. Most of the other Interac droids starting in April that I've talked to have no idea of their locations, either, so we have no dis/advantage.
