I have been here for several years and can say there are some excellent programs in Barcelona. Whatever program you choose here are some things to look for:
1. If you are looking at intensive 4 week courses, it should be about 130 hours.
2. You will find that the best schools are accredited by outside organizations. These accrediting, or validating, organizations monitor the course to assure that it meets standards so, in a sense, part of the accrediting organization's role is along the lines of quality assurance. The program where I work is accredited by the School for International Training (S.I.T.) in Brattleboro, Vermont. Other accredited courses are CELTA and TRINITY. CELTA is accredited by Cambridge ESOL. Trinity TESOL is accredited Trinity College London. All three of these certificate courses meet the rigorous standards. If a program says it is INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED, ask by whom. Although some employers may accept a non-accredited certificate, some will not. So, while you should eventually be able to get work with such a certificate, perhaps not at the language school you most want.
3. The course should include from 4 to 6 sessions in which you are observed teaching real classes and then given critiques.
4. It is a real advantage if the course is held at a real language school, so you can see how one operates.
5. Job guidance should be provided -- not just during the course, but for as long as you need it after the course.
6. Trainers should have advanced degrees such as a Masters or the DELTA as well as lots of experience.
I hope that helps. |
