My girlfriend and I are currently in a TESL certification program. WE'd love to live somewhere in Latin America for a year and had planned to save money for our education back in Canada. Can a new teacher actually make enough to save any real amount of money in Latin America?

Where are the jobs??

There are jobs every where, most people just pick a country and show up there and look for jobs. As for saving money, it just depends on how frugal you can be.

It is possible to make decent money in Latin Ameria as an English teacher. I taught at a private school for a year, paid for all my travel expenses, and managed to save about $3000 US while I was there. I would not say that lived well while I was there, but I had a clean place to stay and the job was decent. However, finding a well paying job is difficult. You have to look long and hard and make sure the place you sign on with is legitimate.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but unless you're an experienced teacher (preferably with at a Master's degree) a lot of the "better" employers will not give you the time of day. That means that unless you are extremely lucky--and the chances of lightning striking for both of you are quite remote--you will not receive many attractive offers. If I were you, I would save up some money where you are, and come to Latin America to travel for awhile.

Dont let Moonraven put you off - there ARE good jobs in Latin America for relatively inexperienced teachers, you just have to look hard... Smile
