I read today that Indonesia has about 129 active volcanos. So I guess it also has it's share of earthquakes.
Are earthquakes a common occurence? Have any of you experienced any powerful or particularly scary ones?
I'm due to be in Java by october so I'm keen to know how much a part of life in Indonesia earthquakes are.
I spent a few years in Japan which has fairly regular tremors. I never experienced anything big, thankfully.
Earthquakes freak me out.... |

I've never experienced one there, but my wife informs me that they occasionally get small ones in Bandung (West Java), where she's from. Nothing to worry about though. |

I never felt an earthquake when I was in Jakarta (for a year).
One of the teachers I worked with did experience a mild magnitude 5 quake while visiting Bali. |

I have felt at least 3 sizeable earthquakes in Indo... not large enough to produce death or destruction, but interesting to feel.
One was in Bogor late 2000, another one in Jakarta early 2001, and a sizeable one in the early morning in Bali in December 2003.
Earthquakes and their frequency are hard to predict or to estimate, if you could you could make a fortune in the Los Angelas area. |
