Hi all. I'm currently working at a buxiban here (evening hours) and I want to get another part-time job in the mornings. I just want to know what the consequences of this are as I believe it isn't legal to work anywhere other than what's on your ARC. However, would this be considered like private student illegal, getting a fine illegal, or having my ass deported illegal? If so, is there any type of legal work I can do here while still employed at my school? Thanks for any insights! Very Happy

Privates are not considered jobs per se, so your employers will give you their blessing. Anyway, how would anyone find out about them, much less stop you from doing them? Your company won't care about private tutoring. They will care if they find out that you're working for another company. But, then again, they'd have to find out about it. Alot of bushiban teachers do some extra kindie work to suppliment their income. I've contemplated it, but probably wouldn't be able to stand the work. I wouldn't worry about taking the extra work. Lots of people do. Just be discreet.

Teaching privates is very unlikely to cause any problems. The only thing you shouldnt't do is "poach" students from the school where you work.

You must be aware that teaching illegally in a cram school or kindergarten carries with it the risk of being deported. Police do occassionally conduct raids, so before you take on any second job consider the risks.

Some schools are quite happy if you take on another job provided it doesn't clash with your hours at the main school. Others regard it as a strict no-no. So like TaoyuanSteve wrote it is important to be discreet.

Thanks for the speedy replies! My school has said that I can work elswhere as long as it doesn't conflict with my schedule there. But, should I tell prospective new schools that I'm already working elsewhere or not? I assume no (so as to be discreet) but when they want me to the whole ARC thing I already have one so....?

The Taiwanese have a certain lawless aspect about them. Things like tax evasion and disregard for regulations are old and widely practiced traditions over here. It's very unlikely that a school you want to get some extra hours from is going to ask if you work elsewhere, much less care. When you say you want part-time, and stipulate your available hours, they'll assume you have another job. How else would you have gotten your resident visa? Some of your chinese coworkers at your main job may even set you up with kindie work; in this case the kindie will almost certainly know where you work most of your hours. If your sponsoring company is ok with moonlighting, then you pretty much have the green light to do it. Foreign affairs Raids, while not totally non-existent, are exceedingly rare. You're not likely to encounter problems. Just don't tell too many people.
