Who out there is really teaching ESOL and not EFL?
Hands up please! You at the back what do you mean "What's the difference"?
I just revisited a site, www.esol-sig.org.uk/ after six months and nothing had changed.
Surely there are some more ESOllers out there. Where do they Emeet?
Is there an ESOL site?
I don't know of one. Anyone care to comment? |

In the project I'm involved in we don't distinguish. Most of my students are British of Asian origin but there are generally EU students in the same class as they are classed as home students. The people I don't teach are 'Overseas' students mostly Chinese, Russian and Middle Eastern who are taught by a different department where IELTS & TOEFL come into play. The system has been used by an increasing number of Colleges and Universities since Widening Participation came in. |

Dear Will,
I teach ESOL, but as the college seem to have landed me with low level E1 up to L2 in all the classes I'm not in the mood to discuss tonight! As a part-timer I'm not working tomorrow but will be emailing the bosses in my attempts to sort out the mess..
It's like teaching basic addition and quantum physics in the same class. If only the full time numeracy person who does the induction interviews understood!...

Latest horror story of the new term,
1. Take 2 groups of 20 students...of different levels... first lesson.
2. Place in separate classrooms suitable for 12 students.
3. Take two teachers
4. Plan your first lesson (yes I mean it)
5. Remove one teacher.
6. Explain the procedure to both groups.. impress them by your efficiency.
7. Teach both classes in two different places.
Wait 24 hours
Repeat procedure 1.
Remove one classroom...
Place 42 students in one small room and teach two lessons, one at each end of it.
i will try and post the photos for you all. It has to be seen to be believed. |

I'm never going to teach in London, but you couldn't advise us of the establishment Will?
By the way: I laughed, but it was horrified sympathetic laughter. I'd also love to know more about your lesson planning skills!! I believe you, but the photos would be appreciated:-)
And they'll still blame you for poor retention levels.....
all the best

Hi Sue
Should you check all my postings you would find a reference to my current employer somewhere in the middle of the summer this year on the Defence of Americans thread or thereabout in the General Discussion site.
For you, I have sent a PM rather than advertise incompetency while still employed. |
