Just curious to know why everyone unfortunate enough to have to do a visa run goes to Singapore. Surely you can stay in KL for half the price, and chew gum? Flights cost about the same if you shop around.

Am I missing something really obvious here?

Singapore you can get visa in 4 to 6 hours thru an agent, then fly back to Indonesia the same day. Brunei I have not found an agent, so stay overnight in the most boring city on the planet.

hey there

last time I was in Singapore making a visa run they were in the process of changing the time it takes from 1 day to 3 days. I was lucky enough to get through as I made some calls back to Palembang and get them to contact the
Head Dip (he's from Palembang Smile ). I recommend the next anyone goes for their visa in Singapore to take some pempek .

Officially it takes 3 days, but don't forget that this is the Indonesian embassy. An extra "processing charge" and you can be done in a few hours. This effectively doubles the cost of the visa, but is still cheaper than spending 2 nights in Singapore and watching your rupiah go up in smoke.

A huge advantage in going to Singapore, apart from the agent doing all the leg-work, was that you could buy all the English language books you could afford, either new or 2nd-hand, just around from Orchard Rd.

I always seemed to end up in places in Indonesia where English language books (I'm not talking about English grammar here) were hard to find, expensive or dead boring.

Also, books were at least half the price they were in Australia. You have a 20kg baggage allowance - use it! Wink

Can't say I'd thought of trying there for a cheap book Wink

Speaking of which, I bought a very handy Oxford Beginner's dictionary in S'pore (S$15.00). A few months later, I saw the same book on sale in Perth, for three times the price. I checked insde the cover, and it was printed in the same place. Hence my comment about books being cheaper in SIN.

Hehe it's not exactly the first place I'd think of either! Smile I was just passing through there, and in desperate need of a cheap book. Actually I was trying to do a swap, and he was saying how good some crap glossy freebie from a women's magazine was. I ended up swapping for the best of a bad lot, and it ended up being the worst book I've ever read.

I did a similar thing in Bangkok. I ended up with the only English book in the store, but I was desperate to read something. I ended up with "A History of Ghosts".

Took it back to Indonesia, and had to fight off the local staff who all wanted to read it! The students loved me reading a few short stories to them.

Thank heavens for Amazon.uk. I used to get books from them, which still worked out a reasonable price, even with airmail postage.
