Dear ClockworkBjorn,
Let me admit right off that I have no first-hand, personal experience of Yemen. I've been in Saudi Arabia for 19 years, though, and from all I've heard, seen and read, I would NOT go to Yemen. That place is too wild and wooley, even for me.
Regards,
John |

Like johnslat i would not even think about the Yemen and I would not recommend it to anyone. Like saudi before the oil. Wilder. Xenophobic. Haunt of looney Islamists who think they should cleanse the country of the unbeliever.
If you want Arabia, come to Saudi ! |

Dear ibtisam23,
I have notified the Irony Police, and they should be arriving at your door in Sydney any moment now to take you into custody for flagrant abuse of a rhetorical device. If I were you, I'd call my lawyer now.
Regards,
John |

Well there are lots of things about Saudi Arabia but "enjoyment" is going a bit far. I like these pictures of King Abdulaziz that I get on payday.
The attitude to "enjoyment" here is akin to the Puritan Calvinist or Southern Baptist. If you are enjoying something it must be sinful. |

Dear Clockwork,
Look further down and you will see a posting of mine on Yemen. If you stay in Sanaa you will probably be OK; ditto if you stay on a protected compound.
Kidnapping is a near certainty if you move out of Sanaa without a fully armed escort.
Most of the Yemenis are friendly. The looney Islamists who go around kidnapping Westerners are generally British citizens brought up in the UK. For some strange reason they feel they can't kidnap anybody in Potters Bar but must fly all the way to Yemen to do it.
This last observation actually is backed up by other things. The nuttiest Islamists I ever met in Saudi were all either Americans or Brits. We had one in Riyadh who used to harangue the juniors for over 40 minutes every morning about how they should never give in to the multiple vices of the West. He came from High Wycombe! I had never realized it was such a den of suburban depravity. |
