To anybody teaching in the UK:

I've got a meeting with a company tomorrow morning regarding potential work teaching a Malaysian Chinese employee. I guessed correctly in my initial telephone conversation with personnel that the student has a characteristically spiky profile, and I would potentially be concentrating on speaking and pronunciation.

My question is though, what to charge this company's training budget? I was thinking of aiming for 25 an hour and 1.5 hour sessions, the price to include my travel time. Not having done this before any advice would be welcome.

Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue
I'm no expert, but I would have thought that if it includes travel time, you should be asking 30/hr minimum. If they went through a school or agency they would be paying 40-50/hour, I'm sure.

I agree, 30/hour at least. I used to charge 20 and was told I was completely underselling myself, or rather more crudely, 'that's what non-natives charge'.

Thanks guys (and for the privmails),

In the end I asked and got 25 and suggested a 10 hour initial trial which would suit both parties.

I've never done 1-2-1s before and with the advantage of being able to offset expenses against tax and update my CV into the bargain I'm happy enough.
