Hi, I recently passed my CELTA and wondered what opportunities are available in January for a new teacher. Have gathered from this forum that the biggest market is in Rome. But do schools still recruit in Jan? I'm an EU citizen and graduate by the way. Any info would be much appreciated!

Hi Cherrytree

It's a bit of a flat market at the moment, and there doesn't seem to be much work around at all. Many schools cut their costs in order to compete, which means that teachers aren't paid very well. You'd earn more (in all likelihood) in Milan, where the living costs are higher.

We're now heading into the Christmas holiday period, and there isn't much activity until the second week of January (after the "Befania" festival). If you start putting your CV around then you may pick up some work.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I also wondered if anyone could give me a contact for the British School in Rome. From reading the eslcafe journal it seems to have a good reputation but an internet search just came up with a list of secondary schools that are British. Is the 'British School' a chain?

Yes, they are a chain. There's also the British Institutes, who are another chain. I don't have a contact number for them, but they should be in the phone book. Have you tried le pagine gialle?

Another link you could try is:
www.wantedinrome.com

They often advertise jobs.
