Anyone know of any ESL schools for adult students in Townsville apart from the university one? Couldn't find any on the web, but that could be my web searching skills.

Do a search here in the Australia board for the NEAS website. They have a list of all the accredited schools in Australia.

Hopefully, that'll get you started. Wink

Good luck!

I would doubt there would be many as it is not really the sort of town international students flock to so they can learn English.

Polina,

It's possible that the TAFE colleges, in Townsville, might provide some ESL courses. But the Queensland TAFE sector usually expects their ESL teachers to have more than just a "BA + CELTA" - it would appear that they want their teachers to have completed some course in "workplace training", or whatever. Check the TAFE website. Also, check the online Yellow Pages, for Townsville, to see if there are any language schools in town.

I can't imagine that too many international students would want to go to Townsville - most would rather go to the Gold Coast, Cairns or Brisbane. Have you ever considered any of those three areas ?

Peter

This is a bit late, but someone might find it useful at some time.

Townsville has the JCU Language Centre, and that's all. They require at least a MA and probably a CELTA and university teaching experience.

Townsville is a red-neck shytehole, and the home of Australia's largest military base. I lived in Kings Cross for two years and St Kilda for ten, and in all that time I was assaulted twice. In my first six months in Townsville I was assaulted seven times - until I realised that it was my glasses. Apparently the AJ's (Army Jerks as they are universally known in these parts) are intimidated by the apparent intelligence of corrective lens wearers Smile In the two years since I stopped wearing them I've been attacked twice.

Last year a friend was unfortunate enough to be leaving a nightclub at the same time as two officers of the law were having a good old time kicking the shyte out of a black man in the busy main street. My friend was naive enough to point out that such antics were not nice, so they beat him up and charged him with assault. The judge didn't even blink at the obviously edited security tapes, and sentenced him to three months community service. As a fellow wearer of glasses, he has since left Queensland's Alabama for civilised parts. Strangely enough, most of the people I know here that I actually like have also left.

In short, upon arrival in Townsville, get the first ferry to Magnetic Island, enjoy yourself, return to Townsville and proceed directly to Cairns.
