No DMB the best thing about Qatar is the feeling that you are really helping the local population.

I got an enormous sense of well being from knowing that my contribution to my students English Language ability directly helped them buy yet another Landcruiser or blow a wad of cash on a mucky weekend in Bahrain/Dubai.

The roundabouts were also rather superb.....great works of minimalist art.

Wht do you mean 'were'? Have all the roundabouts been demolished? Pity. I was always impressed by the Parachute roundabout. I'm sure you'll agree there was nothing minimalist about it.

Dmb .... maybe the Doha Roundabouts are a thing of the past.
After all we've been gone almost a year now and before we left they were replacing them with road traffic junctions.

Parachute roundabout I agree was/is a bit special....I used to see it four or five times a day..going to work and picking up/dropping off the girlfriend.
So yes, it holds a special place in my heart too.

For sheer naive art though Museum Roundabout with it's perfume bottles is hard to beat and deserves its place as the Godfather of Qatar Roundabouts.

I think you misunderstand titanicman. He is already pulling in the riyals with his job, but is bored sick and suffering from an existential angst.

He now wishes to volunteer, so his days no longer seem totally pointless. If you look at his choice of charities it becomes clear that he is not thinking of the Qataris as needing his help, or indeed not even of humans.

However the answer has been given. He should dedicate his non-working hours to the cause of the preservation of the Qatari roundabout. He should form the QRPS, and whenever the authorities threaten to replace a roundabout with a traffic junction, he should squat in the middle in his car (sutiably painted with protest stickers), belongings and assorted cats. He might well even become a tourist attraction.

If he's going to camp out by the roundabouts he'll have to vie for space with all the lazy and ineffectual traffic police....who liberated from the classrooms of QP earn their crust by sleeping in their cars all day long.

I think you should explore the possibilities of working with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge or the Catholic Truth Society.

Think of all the good work you can do in saving souls !

1. Why not join a team of friendly Mosque- Restorers....
Think of all the brownie points you'll get on your ascent to Heaven because there's enough Mosques in Qatar to last you a lifetime!

2. Join an organisation that excels in recuing fallen Qatari women.

3. The preservation of Desert Environment from brain dead youths in Landcruisers.

4. Save the Office Mutawah Society..a great favourite with the QP execs.

5. Clean the beaches with local school kids.....always a winner with the editors of both the Gulf Times and the Peninsula local rags..you'll be sure to get your piccy in the paper!

Over and out time to check the footie scores...did Al Wakra win!!!!

I don't know if this is what you're looking for since it's not really saving the world or anything, but volunteers are needed for the Asian Games in December 2006. There are also some volunteer positions for the West Asian Games in December 2005. If you want something long-term, the Asian Games News Service needs volunteers to do biographical research for athlete profiles. You can find out more from the website: www.doha-2006.com.

They have been turned into parking lots.
