OK forum - we've had threads about horror movies and flics with evil children. How about one for films about teachers? I'll start it going with some favorites of mine:
The Blackboard Jungle
Goodbye, Mr. Chips
To Sir with Love
The Dead Poets' Society
Educating Rita
The Paper Chase
Stand and Deliver
Dangerous Minds
Conrack
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Teachers
Fast Times at Ridgemont High ( Sean Penn is outstanding )
This doesn't have to be confined stictly to movies featuring teachers;
films such as " The Empire Strikes Back " with that guru " Yoda " and books, TV series would also be welcome. I haven't done so, but you might also like to tell WHY you liked the film, book, TV series.
Regards,
John
P.S. But remember - this also from another thread - eschew pomposity.

Good Will Hunting
Billy Elliot (ballet teacher)
Do you remember the old tv show "Welcome Back Kotter" with John Travolta?
Grease
In and Out - Kevin Kline played the English teacher who was "outed" as being gay by a former student while giving his acceptance speech for winning an Oscar (with rather comic consequences!).
The King and I
Sound of Music (governess/nanny, but she taught the children to sing)
My Fair Lady
The Nutty Professor

A new favorite of mine: "Finding Forrester," with Sean Connery

There's also,

The Principal, Jim Belushi, great disciplinarian.
Higher Learning, Lawrence Fishborn, a liberal academic bursting with empathetic disdain.
The Substitute, he's a cop udercover, but his history class lessons talking about the Hells Angels enrapture his students.
There's a really bad one with Michelle Phifer too, but I can't remember the title.

Bad Student, "Just who the hell do you think you are anyway?"

Jim Belushi, (brandishing a baseball bat in his right hand) "I'm Batman!"
Dialog from the Principal.

The dreadful one with Michelle Pfeifer was "Dangerous Minds." God, that one stank.

Classroom - Mr. Holland's Opus. It seems to echo the John Lennon line: "Life is what happens when you're busy making all those plans". A must for all teachers.

The Mentor - Any Star Wars episode, The Matrix.

Sharing wisdom - The Straight Story, Ghandi, The Godfather Exclamation

"Learn by me, if not by my precepts" - Victor von Frankenstein (novel)

Shaman

P.S. What? No Kindergarten Cop? Smile

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "Stripes" yet. Bill Murray's partner (the guy's name escapes me at the moment) has a job teaching ESL. One of the more memorable parts of the scene is him having the class doing the old Shaun Cassidy hit "the Doo Run Run". Laughing

johnslat!!! I can only think of one. Sam L. Jackson (the dude from Pulp Fiction but I think you know that) as an inner city high school teacher. Sorry can't remember the name of it but a damn good movie. A few years ago. Speaking of Sam just saw CHANGING LANES with him and Ben Affleck. OK movie. Usually don't like Affleck but even he was good in this one. Great you can rent dvd's for 2RMB each.

Sorry getting off topic here. Mentor movies there are zillions of them. My favorite is DONNIE BRASCO with Al Pacino mentoring Johnny Depp but he is a snitch. (Depp not Pacino.) Also like the old KUNG_FU movies.
