Just curious, since the UAE is an arab country and presumably moslem if I were to look for a job there I would like to know that I have access to a church. Are there good christian churches available?

Don't go to church myself but several people I work with do. There are certainly plenty around in the UAE. Just ask at your embassy or some people you work with.

There are several churches in Dubai and Sharjah; Roman Catholic, Anglican, Episcopalian, Coptic and Orthodox and probably others. There is freedom to worship but not to convert.

The only country in the Muslim world that I know of that has no churches is Saudi Arabia. The other countries have no restrictions on the practice of your faith - except, of course, the fact that Sunday is a regular working day. The churches seem to work around this with little problem.

As Afra said, the only restriction on Christians is that they may not proselytize. Through the years I have seen a few people quickly deported for appearing to attempt it.

I attend church regularly, my kids go to catechism, and all holidays can be celebrated. Christians are allowed to practice, attend church services, etc. There are churches in almost every EMirate, and 6 new ones have been built near Jebel ALi. There are ten of thousands of christians attending and practicing regularly.
No worries. I'd say we are respected. Also, the Sheikhs provide the land for the churches. There is nothing underground about it.
You actually identify your religion on your visa application, bythe way.

My family and I were in Abu Dhabi from 1998-2000 (I taught at the MLI). All three churches are on the same block, so we used to call it the "church souq." Smile

Anyway, the Evangelical Church of Abu Dhabi is very good, with a great pastor and activities for kids, and there are lots of opportunities for involvement. There are also an Anglican and a Roman Catholic church.

I recommend it.
