Why are Turks so fascinated by the film 'braveheart'?
I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. You get in a taxi and you have the usual conversation with the driver.
Where are you from?
What do you do?
Where do you lıve?
Are you married? Why not?
etc...
Anyway, whenever I tell the driver I'm from Scotland the conversation always ends up about Braveheart.
In Turkey, Scotland is more famous for an Aussie actor than Whıskey!!
Why is/was Braveheart such a big film in Turkey. |

At first I thought it was because of the battle scenes. But maybe it's also because they hate the English Imperialists and they like seeing them getting their butts kicked by the poor farmer serfs... In general they seem to have extra love for Scottish people anyway. Perhaps you're extra endearing? And as far as I know, Scotland has never gone around colonising anyone, or otherwise making global nuisances of themselves. Have you ever been embarassed or nervous about saying you're Scottish? |

Embarrasssed about being Scottish Usually after every Scottish Rugby match. Nervous? I made sure to keep my mouth shut at the Gatatasaray Rangers match a few years ago. I did pretend to be Irish though. In the Irish bars of NY. It usually resulted in a free pint of Guiness. |

The film remainds Turks of their own war of 1920-1923. Also it has conections to 18 Mart. The Turkish celerbration of the defeat of the Western fleet trying to enter the Straits. You could call all of this a form of selective memory. |

It is no good giving `em anything except Hollywood films. They hate anything like a Ken Loch film because anything that doesn`t have a happy ending just does not compute.
As for Braveheart, they went mental over The Patriot and Titanic.
Mention Wales and you`re as popular as an Armenian. |
