At a theatre near the Doha English-speasking school (DESS). One dead plus the bomber. Performance of Twelfth Night.
Doha was previously considered "safe". I think it is delusional to imagine that anywhere is safe. After Madrid and Beslan anything is possible |

Latest article says that it was an Egyptian driving the car that crashed into the theater. Naturally almost all of the audience were Westerners. The bomber and a Briton died, twelve went to the hospital and ten of them were treated and released.
You are right, Scot, nowhere is safe anymore. Unfortunately that also includes our home countries.

Is there one country in the Middle East you could term safe?
Qatar although not as radical as Bahrian, where the odd riot, smashing up of 5 star hotel lobbies and stoning of the US embassy seems the norm, could never be termed 'safe' to the extent you feel distanced from the goings on in Saudi and other Gulf states.
Local feelings re Aftghanistan,Iraq and the large and lately more visual presence of US troops in the country run high.
Ok granted it was an Egyptian who launched the attack but to kid yourselves that many Qataris don't also feel a certain discontent re the West is totally misguided.
Many of the young local men talk the talk.....yeah thanks to money, jobs, gadgets and flash cars few are prepared to walk the walk but it only takes one or two incensed radicals to cause havoc death and destruction. |

How can an odd riot be the norm? That's a contradiction! |

What? Why would you ask that especially since you re already on the internet? Ever heard of bbc.co.uk/news? How about TV news, how about a news paper or magazine? |

I don't think this is so strange, and I'm sure dmb is familiar with the news sources you mention, but they don't always give you the whole story. I've heard a lot about various attacks in KSA from former colleagues that was never reported in the news. Besides, dmb posted this just after it happened and before the details were in the news. |

thank you for your replies. Bexely, I am aware of various websites for news but as HPD pointed out they aren't always the best source for news. Since the OP I have received a number of pms and emails from friends in Doha. Their info was alot more informative than bbc.co.uk. On more than one occasion I have found this forum to be more informative than any other website. |

I have heard - not from BBC or other official media sources - that the presentation of 12th Night in Doha was an "alternative" presentation with simulated homosexual acts on stage. Comments ? |

Would simulated homosexual acts prompt simulated acts of outrage?
I am reminded of a conversation overheard in the lobby of the House of Commons. One Tory MP asked another, "What should we do about the Homosexuality Bill, Rodney?" Rodney replied, "Pay it, old boy, pay it." |

Hardly 'alternate' -n no women actors in Shakespeare's time.
Perhaps they dressed Malvolio up with a long beard and short thobe? |
