I've been reading the other entries about Czech and Poland, all sounds depressing. Are there any good schools in either countries? I've done two years in Asia, so I can put up with crappy policies and bosses, what I'm most concerned about are accomodations and pay. I don't need lots of money, I live pretty quietly; but I need to have cash for the flight home and a little travel!
I really want to travel around Europe on weekends/holidays - that's the whole push for me being there. Is this even possible on the wages that are available? I also have a question about the issue of EU visas? I found the other posts confusing - what's the current policy since I'm a Canadian? I thought that neither Czech nor Poland was EU?
Anyone who knows positive schools, experiences or cities please let me know. I have my heart set on this region, but am getting very discouraged!. Thanks! Rheanne |

Both Czech and Poland are set to go EU(if they have not already approved membership...I know they were both set to go EU...I have not been following it recently)Since you are not EU,you might have problems getting the work permit.Notice I am not saying you will, but PROBABLY(I do not pretend to be an expert on the EU or the policies in either country...although I have taught in both...in pre-EU days).
As for money...after all,it is eastern Europe. You will not make a whole wad of cash.Nothing approaching what you could make in Asia or the Middle East In all probability.you would make more in Poland than Czech(check out the Job Journal Forum for info on Czech salaries...depressing)
It is POSSIBLE to save enough for your flight home, especially if you work in Poland.Travel money?Depends where you want to go.If you want to travel around in the general region...the Baltics,Slovakia,etc.yes...you will make enough money to travel SOME.Germany ,Austria and Scandinavia are more expensive. If you want to go there.you might have to dip into your own finds.Italy,France, places further away,,,you would definitely have to dip into your own funds.
Good schools?Yes,there are some. But that does not necessarily mean that they pay more than the "not-so good schools". |

You can make enough in Poland to do some travelling ( at least in Eastern Europe- Western Europe is probably WAY to expensive) and sock enough away for the flight home. However, it may take doing some privates. If you you wish to look for some decent schools, I would suggest Dave's "Job Information Journal". Good luck. Poland is a great choice for a place to teach in. |
