@Bluetortilla - may I ask what country you were applying for your Z visa from? Does the processing time vary in different countries?
Any help is genuinely greatly appreciated as it's all pretty unknown to me. |
I applied from Japan. The consulate was really uptight about the med. check but otherwise it went smoothly.
I'm sure every embassy/consulate has its own 'flavor.'
If you don't mind my saying so- just go for it. IF you have the money that is. If it doesn't pan out, you can always go elsewhere in Asia and try again. Unless you have set plans. Bottom line is that i don't see how experience in a Chinese conversation school would do that much for your TESL resume anyway, so it doesn't seem that you have much to lose. Get a Plan B and go.

Of course if you're nervous about this you can always turn down the school now and go for another one. Tons are hiring.
Re money- You should always have enough in reserve to get you by for a few months in Asia (not Japan or Korea which is a LOT) anyway. Something could always go wrong. |

I am also hoping to either apply for a Z visa from said K country and would appreciate hearing people's experiences with that. |

Can't do it unless you have 6 months left on your ARC when you apply. If you want more info, PM me. IF we can get the other thousand docs they need, we'll be going to Thailand for the visa |

there was a thread a few months back, explained how to get your
z-visa with less than 6 months on your k-land papers. i think it
involved visiting china on a tourist visa, then you can get the
z-visa through an agent when you return. |

I'd be interested in reading that thread.
I can't get a tourist visa with less than 6 months of residency, so I'd have to go to Thailand anyways, just to get the Chinese tourist visa. |

Naturegirl, another option is to have your place of employment list Hong Kong on the invitation letter. That's how my wife and I did it. We went to Hong Kong to get our Z visas back in September. |

I think they might have changed. The HK embassy says that you now have to be a resident in HK in order to get it. Looks like Thailand is it!
Question for you: did the HK embassy accept your US medical checks and US marriage cert? |

And it's not Thailand either I just got this from the embassy. So, I can't apply in Thailand or Korea or HK, which means I'm not so sure I can take the job then. Could go home, but my husband and I have to apply together and he can't apply in the US.
Dear madam,
if you want to apply for the work visa in thai, you should afford your residence visa or work permit in thai.I'm sorry. |

Naturegirl, I was in a similar bind last year. I was in Bangkok and I was not permitted to apply for the z-visa because, I presume, of my visa status in Thailand - tourist visa.
So, to solve it I applied for the z visa in Canada. I fedexed my passport to Vancouver to a visa processing agency. It cost a pretty penny, ~300 CAD (this was for 4 day service, cheaper if you want to wait a few extra days) I think, but the alternative was flying back, which would have easily quadrupled that cost. It is possible to do this with an American passport as well, I believe.
Good luck |

Thanks, I've thought about that, could do that for me, not sure about the baby. Definitely can't do it for my husband. I guess I'll have to wait and see what the school says. |

I have no idea whether it is possible or not for a child, though it is worth a call to see.?. The visa agency I used was fairly established and they were fairly knowledgeable about the ins and outs ( I worked through the head office). What nationality is your husband ? |

I should receive my paperwork for my Z visa within the next few weeks (keeping my fingers crossed). The Chinese Embassy website says you must apply for the visa at the consulate office serving the state you reside in. Is this absolutely necessary? I reside in Tennessee (which would require a trip to DC, or paying a service), but I'll be making a trip to California before leaving for China - can I apply in CA in person? Thanks! |
