How are online TEFL certificates (with past teaching experience) viewed in Costa Rica? Will it be possible to get a good job, or should I just spend the thousands to get one in person?

In-person certification shouldn't run you more than $1500 USD. If you can't beat that, shop around some more.
As far as the validity of online certs, I can't help you much. But it appears to me that you can find a job with or with out any certification. Your primary skill will be knowing English as your mother-tongue. Beyond that, I would think a high-school graduate would be next, followed by college level course-work, followed by a degree of some sort, then polished off with a nice certification.
Ooo! and then experience... heh.
Personally, I'm more interested in TEFL/TESOL certification for the tips it would provide in actual teaching instruction, not so much the certification itself.
Surely someone can here be more helpful than me! lol
good luck,

It looks better to employers if you have the actual certification rather than an online version. I know three people who've done it and it sounded like a joke to do it online. It doesn't give you any practical experience, only regurgitation of theories. But if you have the practical experience already, maybe it doesn't matter.
I think if you find a course that's highly regarded, then it's definitely worth the time and money to get the certification. The CELTA course at Instituto Britanico in San Pedro, Costa Rica was a fantastic course. But other teachers have said that their certification course wasn't nearly as rigorous or practical, so do your research before you choose one. |
