Can anyone give me details? What qualifications are needed? I have a CELTA, an MA (undergraduate) in English Literature and 6 months tefl experience. I'm also an EU citizen and English mother tongue.

If you are not Italian you can forget getting a proper job in a University. It's practically a closed shop. And then you need contacts with influence. High schools are similarly impenetrable unless you've been here for a while and have done some fill-in lessons possibly, got you're face known to the school powers that be etc. This ain't the USA or UK when it comes to these (and many other) institutions. Good luck if you want to try.

what the last poster has said is not entirely true. it is possible to get a job as a lettore in a university - teaching english language to groups of 10-40 students. (just write to the university in the cities you want to teach in) - i think the minimum requirement is an MA - i'm not sure exactly what you mean by an undergraduate MA though - i though by definition that you had to have a BA to study for an MA? so if you don't have a bachelor's degree I'm not sure if you would be qualified. As the other poster says, to get a proper ie permanent academic posting in an italian university is virtually impossible for a foreigner, but you couldn't apply for those withoit a phd anyway. Forget about teaching English in the state system.
If you're lucky you can get a position as a lettore but your chances are very slim unless you live here and know the right people.
