Hey, we've just got a few questions about the visa's in brazil. From all the research we've done, it seems like getting a work visa in brazil will be hard to impossible. Here are my questions.

1) Does anyone know of any schools that will help with a leagal visa?
2) Canadians can only spend 6 months in brazil a year, and we need to get our tourist visa's before we leave for brazil. How do you "border-hop" and re-enter brazil?

Thanks,
Adam & Cara

this is not necessary or really beneficial unless you are well-connected
and want to raise a family or have something long term in mind.

it's relatively simple: when you get close to 6 months, pick another country in south america, hop on a plane, enjoy yourself for a bit, get a new visa (renew) and come on back into brazil. if you can't leave for a little weekend excursion, you could pay someone (about the cost of your trip) to renew your visa (backhander) while in Brazil (common too) - then repeat process....

Work visas are next to impossible to get for just about any profession, not only ESL instructors. Its also a real expensive proposition for the employer, so they wont bother sponsoring you if they schools aim is to make money and they have to spend a fortune making you legal. I was reading a job posting for the Berlitz schools and they only accepted applications from those who were already permanent residents.

As for the tourist visa, you only get a THREE month visa, not six. You can extend the visa to stay an additional three months (making a total of six) by paying the Federal Police. But you must do this BEFORE the three months have expired. If you dont, youll be in the country illegally and they wont approve the extension for you.

Also, I commented on this in another thread, but I dont think the third country approach to renewing your visa works anymore. I have heard of people being denied entry for trying this.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I am a dual US and Canadian Citizen (since you mentioned you were Canadian) and I looked into the Brazilian visa procedures for both countries before I got mine. They're essentially the same. I got mine with my US Passport, so I paid $100. The cost for Canada is roughly the same, maybe a little more since it's more expensive for Brazilians to apply for a Canadian visa rather than an American one and Brazil follows reciprocity to the T.

My friend interviewed for a school in Sao Paulo. They only hire Canadian teachers and they do sponsor teachers to go down to Brazil. I think they ask you to pay about 25% of the sponsorship. Here is the website if you are interested www.canenglishvision.com

I am going to submit my application. Wish me luck!
