Hello all,

This is my first posting, so please forgive any faux pas.

Does anyone out there know anything about the town of Sokolov in Bohemia? (or it's surrounding area.) All that I've managed to scrape together is that it is in an industrial area about 150 km northwest of Prague. Not enough to base a decision about a job on.

Also, regarding working in the Czech Republic, it appears to me that, given the list of documents required for a work visa, it may be better to pursue the visa after arrival rather than from this side of the Atlantic. Does this sound correct?

I'd appreciate any info that anyone has.

Thanks.

LJ

It will probably be easier to get your visa documents here, especially if you have someone who speaks Czech (from your job, probably?) to help you out. In most cases, I think schools are willing to pay you under the table until your visa comes through. The majority of teachers here actually work without a visa.

If you are able to get some documents in America (for example, the doctors note and affadavit of no criminal record), keep in mind that all English documents must be translated to Czech and notarized before they can be submitted. For some documents, like your birth certificate and diplomas, this is necessary no matter what. Official translation can be pricey- 20 to 30 American dollars per page depending on where you are, sometimes more if you aren't careful.

If possible, you might want to bring the original copies of your diplomas over here. I only brought notarized photocopies (which I had been told were sufficient) and had a bit of a problem because American notary power isn't always recognized in other countries.

Good luck!
