ITALY
I worked from January to July 2005 with the type of temporary contract that offers no benefits, no holiday pay, no sick pay, etc. The school is closed in August. I received the same type of contract for the Sept 05 - July 06 school year.
Is there any point in time when the school has to give me a proper contract including sick pay, holiday pay, etc.? Some teachers at the school are interested in unionizing... is this possible? We all work legally (I have an EU passport, a codice fiscale, a permesso di soggiorno and a residence card). |

Labour laws are rapidly changing in Italy giving employers more power and workers fewer rights and the main trend is leading to "lavoro a tempo determinato", but, technically, with some help from an attorney, they are supposed to offer you a "contratto a tempo indeterminato" after two years of full-time work. But do you really want to do that? If you and the other teachers demand such a contract then your employer will probably go out of business. |
