Hello. Saudi Arabia is not a touristy place. Dhahran is the home base for Saudi Aramco. and you can see the causeway and Bahrain from there. Perhaps there one might find touristy things....Dhahran is not bad. just not really geared to tourism. That said, it is problably the freest place in the Kingdom.
...Not saying much.

DHAHRAN. The spelling always catches people.
Three cities in one : Dhahran, Dammam and Al-Khobar.
Dhahran is basically Aramco, King Fahd University and the US Consulate.
It was the first part of the Kingdom to be "opened up" back in the 1930's and 1940's.
Not much happening unless you have access to the expatriate compounds.
In my view the place is less cosmopolitan than Jeddah.
Anyway some people like and others can't get out quick enough. |

Hass,
It really just all depends on the job. If you are going there to work with Aramco, then you will be on the Aramco compound and it is quite western. You can go about a "fairly" normal life and it is a comfortable place in which to live.
I agree with Scot about Jeddah being more cosmopolitan in general. Jeddah is an old city and there is something of culture there. Dhahran is basically a new city built around crude oil.
Again, if you have a multiple exit re-entry visa, Bahrain will allow you a place to go spend money and feel more "normal".
Hope this helps,
