Have to confess that my a/c was always set to around 23/24, although didn't need it on in 'winter'. Even remember walking on the beach on Boxing Day in T'shirts and jeans. |

I am always amazed by the shops selling scarves and sweaters for the "winter" season as I am walking around in shorts and a T-shirt. It's NEVER cold here in Muscat. Yes, up on Jebel Shams it sometimes gets maybe a tiny amount of snow, but around Muscat I swim in the sea in Jan/Feb to cool down. This past week I had the AC off much of the time, but had the water heater on. In summer you turn the water heater off to provide a source of coolish water from the "hot" water tap to temper the heat of the "cold" water from the cold-water tap which is so hot from the sun on the street you could parboil yourself.
Interesting to me, an amateur gardener, my morning glories are perennial here, and are now thinking about flowering. (November!) The runner beans are flowering and perhaps will produce five or six pods. (not a real success, granted, but the purple flowers are cool)
Everything here is opposite from what I was used to: birds come here for the winter rather than going away. People start gardening in autumn, since in the summer everything (except bouganvilleas and a few other unknown-to-me plants) dies. And the *#@&%#!! cats start reproducing in abundance.
Gardening tip: plant things under your AC. The humidity is constant, and as you keep cool, the dripping from the AC water extraction keeps the plants happy. Lazy man's watering. |
