|
|
Subject says it all. Since I'm off for a few days, and would like to get an HP desktop computer, (can get all the HP printers, displays, and laptops I want here in Doha, *Desktop* machines seem to be another matter), I figured I'd drive to either Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
Has anyone else driven there? Or would be be a better idea to plan to fly there another weekend, and abandon the whole driving idea. |

Pat,
The biggest...and probably only...problem in driving from Qatar to UAE is that you would have to pass through Saudi Arabia, for which you would need a transit visa. This can be more trouble than it is worth. I don't know what the requirements are for this type of visa, or what the Doha embassy is like. Check it out by all means. Just to let you know that you will need one. This isn't just driving, of course...if you go by bus you would still need it.
There used to be a road from Qatar into UAE directly, but that was closed by the Saudis a long time ago, and the land on which it lies is the subject of an ongoing dispute between the Saudis and the Qataris. |

(Blinks) (Looks at map again)
Looking at the GEO projects 2003 map of the UAE I got at the bookstore. It shows a 2 lane road going down from Salwa Highway to the Qatar/UAE border, and while the road brushes the Saudi border, it doesn't show as going into KSA itself.
Bother. Wish there was someway I could check on the status of this before I went. I resume that if I do go and it's a Qatar/KSA or KSA/UAE border rather than a Qatar/UAE border, worse that happens is they tell me to turn around and go back to Doha, right? |

And it turns out that you can't get there from here. About 5km from the border, big road closed and no admittance signs, and big red and white barricades across the road.
Oh well. Got nice pictures of the desert while I was checking. |

Is the road completely closed? So you can only leave Qatar by plane? What about a ferry service? |

Well, the Qatar/KSA crossing on Salwa highway is open. And, with a transit visa, you can use that route to drive to Baharain.
You know, I would have expected a ferry service between Doha and some of it's coastal neighbors. As far as I know though, no. |

There is a ferry from Doha to Tralfamador - or so I am assured by my buddy Kilgore Trout who apperas to me nightly in my dreams. |
