I wonder if there are any HK uni employees using this forum? I'd be interested to learn just how bad uni jobs here have become. I've heard rumours of wage and holiday cuts (18-days annual leave!!??) and external 'management' bodies taking over contracting. All part of the general downward trend of the HK economy post-handover I suppose...?? Can anyone validate these grim rumours or, preferably, say otherwise?

All the people I know who lecture at unis still have 4 months a year off. There is some talk of no pay increases, though.

Hi Bertrand, well hols have been cut for sure at PolyU and HKUST and pay frozen at best....unless people have been lying to me! PolyU have got some kind of managment quango taking over salaries and from next year onwards only 18 days statutory leave (plus public hols). Or so I hear.

Okay, what you say is right, yes. But remember that there exist many differing types of uni employment. Are they employed as academic staff? Researchers? Admin staff? Do they have doctorates? Post doctorate experience? Publication records? If they just TEFL at a uni then yes, things will come into line I am sure.

Bertrand....of course I am talking about tefl lecturers. Why should all of these jobs "come into line?" and what do you mean exactly?

I mean what with the economic downturn and then SARs and then the ever increasing levels of competition all such posts will eventually offer slightly less money, less holiday, etc. At least, that is my two cents.
