I just got back form 2.5 weeks in Romania and found it to be such a great country with amazing scenery, a fascinating history and extremely friendly people. I would enjoy teaching English there and wonder if anyone has recent info on availability, salaries, etc...? Thanks. |

If you look through the posts on the Romanian forum you'll find most of what you want to know.
In short:
- Jobs are extremely scarce.
- Salaries are extremely low.
- You have to be hard-skinned and flexible to get by.
If you really want to work here you'd have to live in Bucharest. This pretty much means you can forget the 'amazing scenery and friendly people'. If you really love getting out into the mountains of Transylvania, it's probably much better to come as a tourist and enjoy the low prices.
If you are determined to live here then your best bet is the British Council, although competition is normally high. A friend of mine there earns (if I remember correctly, which I probably don't) about 500 GBP + 300 Euro housing allow. He does have some seniority though so I wouldn't think this is the starting wage.
You haven't mentioned your experience, but you would have to be quite free-willed and flexible to manage here, and willing to turn your hand to anything that comes your way. It's not a place for those who need the full EFL baby-sitting package (accomm, flight, hols, visas, etc etc).
Best of luck,

According to the news, the CIA runs spring, summer autumn and winter camps over there. |
