I'm planning on passing through Taipei on my way to Indonesia. I would like to spend a night in Taipei in a hotel in or near the airport. Can anyone tip me off as to where a good, low budget (e.g. $30 or $40) hotel is that would be decent for a family to stay in for a night? I need something near to the airport, maybe something with a shuttle. I don't speak Chinese, and I've never been to Taiwan. I'll be exhausted with a wife and infant.

Does Taiwan allow people to stay for 14 days without a visa? Would that include non-US citizens like Indonesians, or is that a deal for Indonesians only?

Here is a good place to start. You will get better rates if you book over the net well in advance. Follow that up with a fax and a telephone number and get the name of the person as well as a confirmation number. Toayuan is the name of the closest city to the airport. Taipei is an hour drive in traffic from the airport. You can get a 14 day landing visa at the airport if you have an onward plane ticket. Some nationalities may be able to get more time but I have not heard from anyone who has successfully done this.
There is a fee for landing visas. The last I heard it was NT$ 1,500 dollars ( approximately C$75.00 ).

Have you ever traveled with an infant before?
