This forum seems to be dominated at times by vultures of doom and gloom saying that no EU passport means no chance to work in Italy. It seems however that they are all out of date and that the law changed in 2002 to make things much easier for language schools to hire foreign teachers. There is a very good guide available at http://www.ambrit-rome.com/Music/paige/teaching_in_Italy.pdf which goes into great detail, and the process is very complicated and requires you to be fully legal, but struggle through and you can even benefit from 2 years exemption from income tax. For example just to get a work permit I quote:


to make a request to the Italian
work office,asking permission to hire an individual.
With this request,it is the employer �s job to include:
�a photocopy of the individual �s passport
�a translation of their educational resume
�a statement saying the individual is not living or
working in Italy,
�curriculum vitae
�signed contract in Italian
�a copy of the company�s last year �s income tax
�a copy of the company�s budget,and chamber of
commerce certificate
�contract for the apartment where the individual will
live
�a copy of the director�s passport and other
documents
�a copy of the Italian �anti-Mafi a certificate �
�a declaration that the school has been in existence for
over 5 years
The director of the school signs the request,also
saying that he swears the individual to be hired is not in
the country (Italy).
Once the above is stamped,this all goes to police
headquarters (Questura),where the request is stamped
again.This takes about 10 work days.After it is collected
by a school representative,the stamped request is sent to
the prospective teacher in the U.S.,Australia,or other
home country,and they will in turn take it to their local
Italian Consulate,to request an Italian work permit.All
this takes time,patience,and a certain amount of good
humor.

Whether you can find a school willing to do this is another matter.

Naturegirl, if you were in Scotland, you probably ate Marmite. Vegemite is a pale Australian imitation. Marmite's the real thing!
