I asked my wife what she thought, this is what she said..
If I made my husband stay here forever he probably would divorce me.
I disagree, as I love my wife dearly. Mind you if she would have told me that I had to live in Taiwan if I wanted to marry her, I dont what I would have said.
We have always agreed that we would move on sooner or later. It doesnt have to be my home country but Taiwan is not where I want to raise my family.
My advice is this, if your life in Taiwan is going to be dominated by your girlfriend or wifes family, dont do it. You will only be miserable and broke. Her family will also be very disappointed.
I think the way my wifes family sees our marriage is a back door should things take a turn for the worse here in Taiwan. They understand that we are not going to spend our lives here. Once we have attained our goals we move on. If they would like to live or immigrate I will be more than happy to assist them.
Yes, you can be successful in Taiwan. Being a foreigner has its advantages and disadvantages. If you can figure out how to make that work for you, you will succeed. The question is at what price and is it worth it?. I cant answer that for you.
As far as mindless jobs go, if you want to be a successful teacher is Taiwan you have got to be of above average intelligence, more so out of the classroom than in. One of our more outspoken posters writes, Nothing is easy in Taiwan. If you like to be challenged on a daily basis, Taiwan is the place for you.
