I've heard that as of 1 January 2004, foreigners will only be allowed to remit half their salary abroad. I can't guess how the government plans to implement this, but it sounds like pretty bad news for us. Is this rumor true? |

I read this message to a fellow expat and his reaction ws the same as mine "Rubbish!".
Neither of us had heard this rumour - and as you know, rumours are ten a rial in this place. The government know that most expats here send almost all of their salaries home, whether home is in The Phillippines, the US or Pakistan. I know the authorities in KSA have a way of shooting themselves in the foot, but I honestly can't believe this one. |

Dear Tom Cat,
Of course, one never knows what's going to happen here, often without much, if any, warning. But I ditto Cleopatra's estimate: rubbish. I haven't heard even the slighest hint of anything like this.
Regards,

I cannot believe that there is any truth in this. Exchange control (ie restrictions on movement of currencies) is viewed in the Kingdom as "unIslamic". Mind you a lot of things that go on in the Kingdom could be seen as "unIslamic". (have a look at the way many workers from East Asia are treated !)
Seriously I think there is no danget of this at all. And the idea of introducing income tax has been shelved too.
The goverrnment here knows that they have to be nice to foreigners working here - within reason that is ! |
