There aren't jobs simply because it's taught so well in schools, hence every scandanavian over the age of 12 speaking fluent English... I think they could actually teach 'us' a thing or two...

That is soooooo untrue! I have a handful of friends who grew up in Sweden and came to Canada between the ages of 20-25 and only one of them speaks fluent English- the one with the university degree in English who did a year of her degree in Canada! I am always amazed by how well my Swedish friends can get along in English, Spanish, Swedish and the other Scandinavian/Nordic languages... but from my experience their English is nowhere near "fluent".

I have lived in Sweden for some time and Swedes absolutey speak better English than the Norwegians...The Swedes, in my opinion, speak the best English of all the non-english speaking countries (I have lived in or spent significant time in 5 or 6 countries). You can walk into any store in Malmo, Stockholm, or Gothenburg and speak English and 99 percent of the time they will respond in English. As far as jobs here your CELTA is almost useless (outside of a few hours at Folkuniversitet). On the other hand there are loads of international schools in Sweden and if you are certified you can probably find a job (either US or UK certification).

The best chance to teach in Scandinavia is Finland. They have excellent listening, reading and writing skills but their speaking skills aren't that great. Getting into Finland isn't easy but it is easier than getting into Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Finland is 'technically' not part of Scandinavia--it is really part of the Baltics. That said, I lived there for 11 years and if you are an EU citizen it is fairly easy to find a position teaching English in corporations and also some English language kindergartens. Getting a work visa if you are non-EU requires more education/credentials than your EU counterparts and most non-EU citizens I knew were in the country because of their significant others and the employers didn't need to sponsor a visa.

Yes, I was more qualified than many of my EU counterparts!

I may be wrong about this, but I once heard that to teach in Denmark, you must have an English degree from a Danish University to even be considered for an EFL teaching position :/

And as previously mentioned, their English is just waaaaaaaay too good to warrant teaching there anyway most of the time!

Is it possible for an American to find work at one of the large chain schools, like Berlitz or Empik, in Scandinavia? Do they process work permits for native speakers from Non EU countries?

They are far, far more likely to hire a qualified local. Why would they bother with work permits when they have plenty of very good teachers in-country?

It's HIGHLY unlikely.

How do I know? Because I work regularly with teachers from the region, and we do discuss employment options. I, too, would ideally like to live in Scandinavia. So I ask - and I have high-end quals and experience, but still no go.

Damn, its a shame that someone like you couldn't get hired there. But did you apply to a large chain school like Berlitz? They only hire native speakers. I don't have any serious plans to move there, but I wanted to know if it was possible.
