A friend is looking into a teaching position in Qatar. Any information you have about it would be appreciated.
Again, as in my post concerning Rabat, I'd be most interested in salary, cost-of-living, and the social life.
It seems here, as according to the US State Dept., there are some "travel concerns." ???
Thanks again. |

Thanks for the "heads-up," Brooks and Gordon. Was a late night...
Funny you are both in Japan. What do you guys do over there? Both looking into AFRICA? And also both looking into Qatar? Sounds like a match made in Paradise!
Any ideas to share?
Shokran! |

I used to work in Morocco.
No plans on going back, except for a vacation.
I teach English in Japan. |

Hi, again. I wanted to ask anyone, maybe specifically Brooks, about their experience working in Maroc.
Where did you work (city, school, etc.)? Casablanca & Rabat are desirable as I prefer the coast, but Marrakech and Fez seem more intriguing. ?? And then there's Agadir?
What are living conditions like - salary vs. cost of living. I live in ESP, and the salaries are low and well, you pay "a lot" to share a usually not-so-great apartment, but one manages to get by.
One of the main reasons I'd like to go is to learn Arabic. It seems when one lives in a foreign country that there is not so much interaction with the locals - would you say it is also so in Morocco?
Thank you for any feedback, thoughts, ideas. |

I worked at the ALC in Rabat and at EF in Casablanca.
It is probably easier to find work in those cities.
Fez is the cultural capital, and Marrakech is a capital of culture.
Agadir is a beach resort. Germans and other people from Europe like to go there for the sun and sand.
Of course you can learn Arabic in Morocco, but bear in mind they do have a regional dialect, which is different from the Arabic spoken in Egypt, or Oman.
Moroccans are friendly, and far friendlier than Japanese people are.
I have lived in Poland and Russia, as well as Japan, and Moroccans are the friendliest of the bunch.
I used French in Morocco, but of course, if you want to speak Arabic, Moroccans would prefer that. Most foreigners probably don`t bother to speak Arabic in Morocco.
As long as you don`t have debt, the salary is ok. |

Thanks so much for all of your informative replies, Brooks! Sorry, I'm so late...
I've been asking friends in which city I should live in Morocco, and I get so many different answers. Of course, ideally I'd visit first.
Casablanca supposedly has the best job market (?), but is supposedly an "ugly" version of a European city; no one seems much impressed by Rabat. Marrakech seems to be the favorite as far as "an authentic experience." Others, mainly Moroccans, seem to be fond of Agadir...
What were your living conditions like in Casa and Rabat? I'm wondering what the cost of apartments is and what they are like more or less (?).
Question: Do you know if you must be from an English-speaking country and have a BA in order to get a work permit over there?
Just curious, why do you stay in Japan if social situations are - 'as they are?' And, if you liked Maroc, why not return? Where will you go next?
Thanks so much for your time and effort!!! |

well, I am married so I want to make money.
My wife is Japanese, and she doesn`t have the wanderlust I had.
I have a dog and a car and I have settled down.
If I was still single, I think I would head to Prague.
The salaries in Morocco aren`t so good and converting money into dollars was a hassle.
Casablanca is not really attractive,. It is big and polluted.
Migrants go there in search of work. It has at least 5 million people.
I don`t think Rabat is a bad place. But for a single person it is not the most happening of places.
I left Morocco in 1999 so I am not the best one to ask about rents.
In Casablanca I had to pay almost $200 US monthly for a 3 bedroom apartment.
In Rabat some people lived in the old city and I think it was cheaper to live there than in modern housing. |

Hi Haala, I don't know if this post is too late but the rent is increasing especially in Marrekech. You should find a job that offers board, that way you don't have to deal with the rent issues or at least an allowance. I have a place for rent in Casablanca. It's 2 bedrooms for $400 if you want. |
