Now I know most of us have to hop from school to school, but if you have been working at the same school on short term renewable contracts for the last 4 years, you could have the right to a PERMANENT CONTRACT! The relevant EU regulations came into effect in October 2002 (i.e. coming up for four years ago...).
If you think this could apply to you, you should talk to a lawyer.

Yes, and there's a very interesting article from The Guardian about it right here:
http://education.guardian.co.uk/specialreports/lecturerspay/story/0,,1817226,00.html
Some of the remarks make sad reading. For example, "Hourly paid staff get the worst deal when it comes to unpaid overtime. Nearly all (92%) said they did unpaid overtime, compared with more than two-thirds (68%) of all staff on short-term contracts"
Yes, all that preparation and marking you do is most probably unpaid, as you only get paid for the contact hours. At some 'schools', the weekly staff meetings are unpaid too, despite being compulsory!
And then there's this: "only the hotel and catering sector employs a greater percentage of staff on temporary contracts". So pulling pints and flipping burgers stand next to providing education as the great exploiter of human labour!
Who said "Education is Wealth"? Must have been a politician, not a teacher or lecturer! |
