Hello again. So I'm trying to figure out how to finance a masters. Obviously the universities expect international students to be full-fee paying, but I wonder if any of you, particularly Americans, used US gov. loans. I am contacting lending institutions and they tell me that only "Title IV" schools are eligible, and so far the only one I know of is Macquarie. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

TIA

I'm also about to embark on a post-grad degree in Oz. I am funding my school fees by using my savings after working in Japan for a couple of years.

I also hope to pick up TESL jobs to supplement the cost of living while studying over the next two years.

Good luck to you, moot point. Unfortunately I'm a Peace Corps volunteer, therefore I have $0 to my name. But it seems that I can apply for a Stafford Loan.

My husband and I are funding our studies with our savings from our previous work in Taiwan. We are at Griffith Uni, and I believe you can get Stafford loans through this university too.

You can also work up to 20 hours a week on a student visa, but to be honest with you, I can't imagine working even half of those hours as a full time postgrad student. However, you could work a little through the semester to help offset costs and then work full time during the summer break (Nov. to Feb.).

I was a Peace Corps volunteer too, so I understand how broke you are right now! Can I suggest that you consider working in Korea, Japan or Taiwan first for a couple of years to save some cash, and then start your studies? Or, start your studies via distance while working at home or abroad? I don't know how much Stafford loans would be, but let me tell you, Australia isn't a cheap place to live...it is certainly more expensive than what I was used to in the States (I am in the Brisbane area, which is also cheaper than Melbourne and Sydney). And, with loans, you will have them (and their interest) hanging over your head when you finish. Not to mention you will need some cash to move on with from Aus to set up in a new place, whether it be home or abroad.

Just a thought...best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do!
